Meaning

We have entered the evening, and the dominion belongs to Allah. Praise be to Allah. There is no deity except Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. My Lord, I ask You for the good of what is in this night and the good that comes after it. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of what is in this night and the evil that comes after it. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and the evils of old age. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from punishment in the Fire and punishment in the grave.

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported that the Prophet ﷺ would say in the evening: “We have entered the evening and the dominion belongs to Allah. Praise be to Allah. There is no deity except Allah alone, with no partner.” The narrator said: “I think he also said: His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. My Lord, I ask You for the good of what is in this night and the good that comes after it. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what is in this night and the evil that comes after it. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and the evils of old age. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from punishment in the Fire and punishment in the grave.” When morning came, he would say the same, beginning: “We have entered the morning and the dominion belongs to Allah.”
